On three sides of the room you can see some of the more than 200 cantinelle from a medieval house at via Castello 2 (now Osteria del Moro), built in the same area as Palazzo Ricchieri. These are small decorative wooden panels that, between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, were inserted between the beams of painted ceilings, shaping the appearance of homes of the time.
Dating from the early 15th century, those preserved at Palazzo Ricchieri depict scenes of secular life in a direct, vivid style: romances between knights and queens, hunts, tournaments, duels and encounters with supernatural creatures. The bold line outlining figures and objects makes each episode strikingly similar to certain forms of modern visual language, such as comics or the well-known illustrations by Emanuele Luzzati (1921-2007).
