These small painted panels have an unusual convex shape, showing that they once covered the baptismal font that you can still visit in the Duomo Concattedrale di San Marco. Painted around 1534 by Il Pordenone on poplar panels, they depict four episodes from the life of John the Baptist: his birth, his preaching, the Baptism of Christ and the Feast of Herod. Even within the solemnity of the Gospel narratives, the artist retains his unmistakable expressive style. It can be seen in the care given to settings and figures, in his love of landscape, and in everyday details such as the dog gnawing on a bone.
